Kamuning Bakery: Quezon City's Treasure

Having something good is one thing. Tasting something with a story is something else. Founded the same year as Quezon City itself, Kamuning Bakery offers not only good Pan de Sal and cakes but a glimpse of how Quezon City was.

Founded in 1939, by Marcelo and Leticia Bonifacio, Kamuning Bakery opened at one of the first residential area in Quezon City, alongside a barbershop and small grocery. Its first clientel were government employees who were awarded with land and house title on the then Obrero (now Brgy. Kamuning).

In 1945, due to the Battle of Manila, Ermita, Malate and Intramuros were bombed by the Japanese. Thousands died including Leticia's father and husband. Leticia now a widow continued to run the bakery with the help of her uncle Ambrosio Ison. With Leticia's persistence and the love for the business of her kin, Kamuning Bakery withstood the test of time. Today it is now bought and owned by the prominent writer Wilson Lee -Flores.

Located at Judge Jimenez corner K-1st in Kamuning Quezon City, the same place as it was founded back in 1939, it still continues to bake bread the old-fashion way, in a wood fire stone oven (pugon). This cooking method sets the taste apart from the LPG baked ones. They still also use a no-additive, no-preservative recipe.

The old-fashion Pan de Sal and Pan de Suelo are a must try. You can have it for a sandwich or simply with a cup of coffee. They also offer classic Filipino pastries such as Biscochio, Pan de Coco and Spanish bread.

To keep up with the changing time they also offer cinnamon roll, cakes, egg pie, cheesecake and my personal favorite blueberry cheesecake which I often give to friends as gift.

With its long existence, many prominent people became fond of this bakery. Cory Aquino, Richard Gomez, Coney Reyes, Gloria Romero, Julie Yap-Daza, Don Alejandro Roces, Nick Joaquin and Pres. Manuel Quezon himself are but few of prominent names worth dropping.
